Technical //

Point on the keywords to discover an ever changing story which gain its resources from twitter feeds.

This project scans Twitter feeds for the keywords that appear in the middle of the screen. When the system finds a sentence that contains the keyword, by using AS3 code, it saves the full sentence in a database. Once the sentence is saved then the most relevant one is displayed on the screen. If the system comes up with no twitter feed results then the most recent one is displayed as all  The data are stored within a cache.

Conceptual //

LOS? presents a  contemporary portrait of the world’s emotional landscape, exploring  stories and feelings of everyday life within a predetermined narrative concept.The title of the website is a misquote of the word “Lost” but can take different interpretations such as  ”Lose” or ”Loss”.The words summarize the main theme of my work i.e. how information that changes rapidly (in this case the twitter feeds) can change the interpretation of a word.

The project is depending on four different themes.These four themes are : The un-solving mystery, the ever changing nature of the web, the catalyst results of  mass media  and the teenage angst.

The un-solving mystery //

The un-solving mystery is referring to the story’s character escapes from his broken home and end with his mysterious death and as the keywords search for “Body found” and the twitter feed changes to all the new results about new victims that their body found dead somewhere  it adds a mysterious hint about unsolved questions about the death of the character.

The ever changing nature of the web //

The web is a space that everything changes rapidly. So bearing that in mind i tried to:

1) Tell multiple stories with many interpretations as the user will have the ability to change the story intellectual.

2) I will accomplish what I always desired,  to unite the ever-changing nature of the World Wide Web with the solid and lasting structure of an art piece (statue for example). And as Cezanne said ‘I want to make of impressionism something solid and lasting like the art in the museums’.

The catalyst results of  mass media //

We live in a society that depends on information and communication. However information now days tend to have a catalyst result into the human mind.

Teenage angst //

Deals with themes like depression,anger and intense feelings.

Skeleton mask //

//The skeleton in the Mexican tradition is a symbol of  death that promise resurrection. On the famous Day Of the Dead (Mexicans celebrate this day every year) It is believed by many that this is the time when those who have passed away are allowed to return to earth to visit  their families and friends.So the title is named as the night of the dead where all the alienated youth that lived  and died come back to earth.The title’s name is also a reference to the famous horror movie by George Romero the dawn of the dead (1978).By named the project like this i wanted to give a horror hint to the project.

Print The Full story //

The viewer will also has the possibility to print his full story. This element adds a proof of a story and it gives a viewer a personal feeling about his story. The great thing about a matrix printer is that its paper supply is  an endless roll of paper. Because of this the printer would just keep on printing 24/7 without having to insert new paper.

We Feel Fine extracts comments by bloggers from all over the world on how they are feeling and represents the information as colorful, floating spheres. Users can filter the information by selecting an emotion as well as bloggers’ gender, age and the city and weather conditions where he or she is based to reveal anonymous, often highly personal, statements about modern life today. Evaluation of my work – Final version comparing with my Original vision//

Original vision:

I am hoping to create a multimedia experimental webpage as an installation artwork with an interactive narrative based purely online. The study will mainly concentrate on creating a new navigation form and applying it to a non-linear storytelling exploring the possibility space to move equally forward and backwards on time.

Final version:

LOS? presents a  contemporary portrait of the world’s emotional landscape, exploring  stories and feelings of everyday life within a predetermined narrative concept and a non-linear storytelling experience.

The video part and the photos is now ok and ready for use. I shoot the video 3 or 4 days ago and Katie Xu a chinese photographer help me with the composition.

Finally the pieces are now starting to combine together.

The last week the interaction design team exposed our project on the undergraduate exhibition in order to gain some feedback from tutors and the public. Although my project wasn’t ready i gained some good experience and some good coments and feedback about it.

Till now i have a preference on Lyrics as i think it will only work. The problem with the news and horror book is that they contain names and specific information which it will confuse and mislead the viewer and the narrative. On the other hand lyrics are more generic , abstract and poetic and can be adjusted in almost every situation as they likely tend to express a feeling and thus will make the narrative a sort of abstract poem.The news RSS idea do not seems to work.The reason is that they are so random (except if u put a hidden keyword like suburbs–violence) ans some of them so general and informative.
